Travel will be very treacherous all day Saturday but not impossible. Anyone driving will need to add an extra 30 to 60 minutes of time or more to any trips to the mall or Christmas parties.

The Motown area will have a snowy afternoon.

By 6pm, many areas of Southeast Michigan, including Detroit, will have 4 to 6 inches of snow on the ground, on top of lawns, sidewalks and untreated streets. The snow will be light with a bit of fluff to it, which is perfect for skiing.

5 to 6 inches will be anywhere from SW Detroit to areas south of I-94, including communities in Lenawee and Monroe Counties. 4 to just over 5 inches will be the tally anywhere north of I-94 and south if I-69 and Port Huron. Towns and cities north of I-69 will receive 3 to just over 4 inches.

This will be the Detroit area's first shovel-able snow of the season. Residents should fill up and test their snow blowers early and pace themselves if using shovels.

Saturday night will have leftover flurries and scattered light snow. Temps will fall to the upper teens by Sunday morning.

Sunday will have a few snow showers that will add an extra half inch to an inch of snow. Highs will be near 25 degrees.

Daytime temps remain at or below freezing much of next week with more on and off snow showers Monday and Tuesday. Mother Nature will keep untreated surfaces slippery, so students, shoppers and workers should be careful walking and driving all week.

Several snow emergencies have been issued across SE Michigan.

This means parking is restricted on city streets so they can be cleared.
