Metro Detroit forecast: Spectacular stretch of weather ahead!

But will it hold through the weekend?

DETROIT – Before getting to the forecast, just a couple of quick updates:

1. In case you missed it on Monday, the International Space Station will fly overhead again tonight! This time, it fades into view at 9:10 p.m. Face southwest, and it appears low in the sky, then flies almost overhead for the next six minutes before "setting" in the northeast. So what are you looking for? It looks like a bright star that doesn't twinkle, taking a slow path across the sky. Skies should be mostly clear, so this looks like a great night to see it!

2. Hurricane Iselle continues moving toward a direct hit on Hawaii's Big Island tonight, and passes south of the smaller islands tomorrow. Winds as of the time I am writing this are 75 miles per hour, so Iselle will hit either as a minimal hurricane or a strong tropical storm (74 miles per hour is the cutoff between tropical storm and hurricane). Hurricane Warnings are in effect for the Big Island, and Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for the rest of the islands. Then, behind Iselle is Hurricane Julio, which is expected to weaken to tropical storm status and impact the islands this Sunday. The last time a hurricane hit Hawaii was Hurricane Iniki in 1992 -- I remember that one well, as the storm was well south of Hawaii moving due west, then took a 90-degree turn due north right at the islands.

Alright, on to our local forecast:

Mostly clear tonight, with lows in the mid to upper 50s.

Mostly sunny Friday through Sunday, with highs rising from near 80 on Friday into the low 80s on Saturday, and then the low to mid 80s on Sunday. Overnight lows should average the low to mid 60s. Note: high pressure over the Great Lakes will suppress a storm system to our south over the weekend, so a few clouds from that may impact some of you in Lenawee and Monroe Counties. But for most of us, look for a mostly sunny and very pleasant summer weekend!

Partly cloudy on Monday, with highs in the low 80s.

There's a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday as a cold front approaches. Highs in the upper 70s.

Mostly sunny to partly cloudy on Wednesday, with highs in the mid 70s.

Mostly sunny on Thursday, with highs in the upper 70s.
