Big weather changes on the way to Metro Detroit
This wild winter of 2012-2013 continues with the next big storm heading our way here in Metro Detroit.
While we'll miss the blizzard conditions that will develop on the storm's northwest quadrant, it will still have very dramatic impacts on your Tuesday.
First, warm air will stream in this evening. Temperatures will actually rise into the 40s (in fact, near 50 south of Detroit) and hold nearly steady well into the night. But along with the warm air is moisture, and we'll see rain develop later this evening and continue almost until rush hour.
Next, a cold front (the front edge of sharply colder air) will cross the area from west to east between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. If you are up real early before the front comes through, it'll still be pretty mild outside. But don't be fooled...by the time you head home from work it'll be only be in the 20s with wind chills in the single numbers.
Overnight rain will change to snow right after the front comes through, but with temperatures still above freezing, I don't think we'll see any accumulation. HOWEVER, if the temperature crashes below freezing before the surface water evaporates, then there will be a flash freeze on area roads, and another batch of serious accidents. Use some caution if you'll be driving after 8am.
After a few peeks of mid-morning sun as a dry slot behind the cold front swings through, snow showers will redevelop, and we could see some accumulation (perhaps an inch) during the afternoon and early evening. The afternoon rush hour could be a slow drive home.
Finally, it's going to get very windy on Tuesday, with gusts probably approaching 40 mph behind the front. Wind gusts this strong could bring a few branches down, resulting in sporadic power outages across the area.
This is going to be quite a dramatic change in our weather, and don't forget that you can watch it as it happens on our weather page here on ClickonDetroit.com. Keep an eye on both the temperature and radar maps, and watch things change right before your eyes!
