Tigers lose combined no-hitter in 9th inning in win over White Sox

Rajai Davis hit a walkoff triple to win it in the 10th

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers were two outs away from a combined no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night, but a Tyler Saladino triple against Neftali Feliz with one out in the 9th broke it up.

Daniel Norris was on a strict pitch count for his second start since coming off the disabled list, but he threw five perfect innings Tuesday night before handing the ball off to the bullpen.

Norris, who injured his oblique in an Aug. 19 start at Wrigley Field, threw 63 pitches against the White Sox Tuesday, striking out four and retiring all 15 batters he faced. The 22-year-old lefty owns a 3.90 ERA since coming to Detroit in the David Price trade with Toronto.

Buck Farmer relieved Norris in the 6th inning and retired all three batters he faced, striking out two.

The perfect game ended in the top of the 7th, when Ian Krol plunked Adam Eaton with the second pitch of the frame. But Krol bounced back and breezed through the heart of the Chicago order to keep the no-hitter alive.

Drew VerHagen took the ball in the top of the 8th and induced a pair of ground balls before striking out Carlos Sanchez to send the no-hitter into the 9th.

With closer Bruce Rondon unavailable after being sent home due to an effort problem, Neftali Feliz came in to try to polish off the team no-no. He got J.B. Shuck to ground out to lead off the inning, but Saladino followed with a triple to end the bid.

Eaton poured salt in the wound with a single that scored Saladino and erased the Tigers' 1-0 lead.

But the Tigers got out of the jam thanks to a James McCann throw that nailed Eaton as he tried to steal 2nd base. Detroit would walk off on a Rajai Davis RBI triple in the bottom of the 10th.
