DETROIT -

Detroit Tigers third basemen Miguel Cabrera has won his second straight American League MVP award.

Cabrera is the first player to win back-to-back MVP awards since Frank Thomas won for the Chicago White Sox in 1993 and 1994. The win gives the Tigers three straight MVP awards. They are the first AL team to have their players win at least three straight since the New York Yankees won four in a row from 1960 to 1963.

Cabrera hit a career high .348 to win his third straight American League batting title. He also led the AL in OPS (1.078) and belted 44 home runs and drove in 137 runs.

Yesterday, Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer was awarded the AL Cy Young award.
