About the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

First held in 1913-14 as the "National Challenge Cup," the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest of its kind in American soccer. This year, 80 teams from the nation's top five leagues have qualified.

Teams from the top three leagues -- the North American Soccer League, USL Pro and Major League Soccer -- automatically qualify. They don't enter the tournament until the third and fourth rounds.

Detroit City FC is one of five National Premier Soccer League teams to play in the first round of the 2014 Open Cup. Six other NPSL teams will begin play in the second round.

This is DCFC's first appearance in the tournament. They've drawn RWB Adria of the United States Adult Soccer Association. RWB Adria is a Chicago-based team making its 5th appearance in the U.S. Open Cup. The club's previous appearances were in 1991 (when they were a semi-finalist), in 1996, in 2007, and in 2008.

If DCFC wins on Wednesday and advances to the second round, the club will take on the Michigan Bucks -- a Pontiac-based team in the Professional Development League -- on May 14.

Team supporters, the Northern Guard, posted the following video in anticipation of Wednesday's game. The music choice is amazing.

Preview: Detroit City FC vs. Cincinnati Saints

The Cincinnati Saints are brand new to the NPSL. They are now one of five teams in the newly-formed Great Lakes West Conference (Detroit City FC, Lansing United, Michigan Stars FC and Westfield Select).

The Saints were an amateur club which moved up to the professional level just this past year. They competed in the 2013-14 Professional Arena Soccer League season.

Saturday will be the first of three regular season meetings between DCFC and Cincinnati. The second meeting is scheduled for May 30 in Cincinnati and the third is scheduled for July 6 in Detroit.
