The former Vikings' star hasn't played since the opening week of the season, but was getting paid his salary before the announcement Tuesday morning. He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge after admittedly using a tree branch to whip his 4-year-old son.

Peterson's suspension through the rest of the season means the Vikings will play without their offensive weapon on Dec. 14 when they travel to Ford Field to play the Lions. Detroit beat Minnesota 17-3 in their first meeting in Minneapolis Oct. 12.

The Vikings are 3-6 since losing Peterson this season and 4-6 overall. Their next game is Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, one of the hottest teams in the league.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Peterson will appeal the suspension right away.
