Michigan State, Michigan meet in GLI championship

MSU beat Mich. Tech, Michigan topped Boston College in semis

DETROIT – The Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines will play for the Great Lakes Invitational tournament championship on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Michigan defeated Boston College, 4-2, on Thursday night to advance to the final game. Michigan State topped Michigan Tech, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon.

The Wolverines are defending their 2010 tournament title and are trying win it for the fourth time in five years. The Spartans won in 2009.

The schools last met in the championship game in 2008 when Michigan won. Michigan's Louie Caporusso was tournament MVP.

Michigan has won the GLI 14 times, more than any other team since the annual tournament's inception in 1965. Michigan State has won 12 times, second to only Michigan.

The puck will drop at 7:36 p.m. Both teams are playing for state bragging rights and a year with their banner hanging from the Joe Louis rafters.
