Crews begin repair work on Belle Isle Park track

Repair work got under way this week on the road surface at Belle Isle Park ahead of next year's Detroit Grand Prix.
The open-wheel car race returned this year to Belle Isle for the first time since 2008. But poor track conditions stopped the IndyCar race for a little more than two hours. A red flag halted the event 45 laps into a race that was scheduled for 90 laps and shortened to 60.
Workers plan to spend the next several weeks preparing the track for the 2013 race as well as future races on the island.
They'll remove deteriorated concrete areas of the racing surface, evaluate and repair storm drainage systems and install new reinforced concrete areas on the 14-turn, 2.1-mile track.
