Where is state Sen. Virgil Smith?

Neighbors are feeding his dog

DETROIT – After police released images of his ex-wife's car, it isn't a great mystery why state Sen. Virgil Smith hasn't been showing up for work in Lansing, but his whereabouts remains a hot topic.

We last saw Smith one week ago when he left jail after bonding out.

Smith lives just a couple miles from the detention center but, by all accounts, he hasn't returned to his home in Detroit on Wexford Street.

Neighbors have told Local 4 they're feeding his dog and cutting his grass but they haven't seen the state senator in over a week.

Smith's legislative website has also performed a disappearing act of sorts. The page now includes a simple white screen saying his office will continue to be open and available to assist constituents of the fourth district.

However, when you call the number listed all you get is a voice mail recording. That's because Smith's office is locked and his staff has been transferred to the Democratic caucus' central office.

Smith, who had been the minority whip, was stripped of all leadership positions after his arraignment.

He faces felony charges including malicious destruction of property, felonious assault, domestic violence, assault and battery, and felony firearm possession.
