Westland City Council President Pro Tem Adam Hammons is scheduled to have a pretrial hearing Tuesday for charges of driving under the influence in Canton Township.

A Canton Township police officer followed the car Hammons was driving on the evening of Jan. 19 on Cherry Hill Road and observed the car weaving across the road several times.

The officer stopped the car, had Hammons get out, and gave him a field sobriety test, including a breathalyzer.  The test showed Hammons had a blood alcohol level of .12.

Under Michigan law, a blood alcohol level of .08 is legally drunk..

Hammons was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. Hammons admitted he attended a charity event that evening, drank and then drove home.

"I made a poor decision by drinking alcohol that night and then driving home. I truly regret my decision. I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize for any embarrassment this may have brought upon my family or the residents of the city of Westland," Hammons said.
