Wayne County to destroy unused jail cell pods

Pods were to be installed at new Wayne County jail, but project failed

DETROIT – Wayne County will destroy the 20-ton jail pod cells that were built but never installed at a jail project which went over budge and ultimately canceled.

The county was hoping to sell or reuse the pods.

However, the Building Authority said Wednesday it is going to shred the 111 prefabricated cells because it is too costly to send them anywhere to be reused.

The entire collection of jail pods cost just more than $5 million.
