Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office: Man in Batman mask tried to rob elderly woman

Deputies say woman unharmed; Masked man told her he needed money to feed kids

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office says a man in a Batman mask tried to rob an elderly woman early Friday morning at her Ypsilanti Township home.

According to a statement from the office, the elderly woman was in her backyard on Studebaker Avenue around 6:30 a.m. when the masked man approached, started guiding her back into the home and then asked if her husband was still sleeping.

The woman told the man her husband was inside the home with a loaded shotgun, deputies said. The man backed off, apologizing to the woman and telling her he had needed money to buy his kids some food, deputies said.

The woman wasn't harmed.

Deputies said a K9 track of the area led them to Taylor Road, but the masked man's scent was lost there.

The sheriff's office has released this description: A black man, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall to 6 feet tall with a thin build. He was wearing gray sweatpants, gray hooded sweatshirt and a Batman-style hard plastic mask.
