DETROIT – Sigma Alpha Mu's national office has suspended the University of Michigan chapter after members allegedly were involved in costly vandalism at northern Michigan ski resorts.
Members of the Ann Arbor-based chapter caused about $50,000 in damages over the weekend to 40 rooms at the Treetops Resort in Gaylord. Extensive damage also was caused at Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs.
"These incidents simply do not reflect the University of Michigan's values or its expectations," said Royster Harper, vice president for student life, in a release. "The behaviors are a contradiction of what it means to be in and of a community, and we do not believe that being away from campus is a license to act in destructive and irresponsible ways. The university is investigating this fully and those responsible will be held accountable. It is especially disappointing since this behavior does not reflect the broad majority of U-M students who participate in Greek Life and compromises the many valuable contributions these student organizations provide."
Here are all the Greek organizations involved in the vandalism, according to the university:
At Treetops: Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity; Sigma Delta Tau sorority.
At Boyne Highlands: Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity; Alpha Phi sorority.
At Boyne Highlands: Chi Psi fraternity; Delta Gamma sorority.
Requests for more suspensions have been made. A pending investigation by the Michigan State Police could lead to criminal charges.
