DETROIT -

Detroit police found two women dead Monday night in an apartment on the city's west side.

Police said a caretaker in the apartment building, on Linwood Avenue, just south of the John Lodge Freeway, was asked by the building manager to check on the residents of a unit who were late paying their rent.

When the caretaker opened the door of the apartment, he saw a woman lying face up on a couch, with blood coming from her nose and mouth.

The caretaker called police, who found that 68-year-old woman dead and another woman dead on the floor of the apartment.

Police initially said it appeared the apartment had been ransacked, but investigators later said the women may have lived in disarray.

Detroit police homicide investigators were called to the scene, but it was possible the two women died of natural causes.

Autopsies are scheduled for both women.
