TROY, Mich. -

A Troy man has been sentenced to prison time for murdering his father last year.

On Tuesday, he was given 12 to 20 years in prison, with credit for 402 days.

During sentencing Mikes told the courtroom: "I would like to thank all my friends and family. You all have been there- not only today - but every single day of the last 13 months. When my world was shattered you made sure I knew that I was still a part of you. When people tried to say that I was a monster you told me 'I will always be your friend, your nephew, your grandson, your brother'.

Choking back tears he continued, "I will be spending the rest of my life striving to be the person worthy of all the love you have shown me."

His sister said in court, "For the past year and a half I have watched my family disintegrate because of my brother's actions. I remember my dad as an honest and loyal man." She continued, "If I had a more present in my brother's life we might perhaps have a different outcome to what happened last summer. I stand here in support of my brother and also in support of my dad for having raised us."

One of brothers of Patrick Mikes Senior's brothers also addressed the courtroom. "You are simply a murderer who is also smart. Someone who has squandered all the talent and opportunities for which he was blessed."

The 55-year-old father was reported missing July 29,2012, by his two sons -- who said the father had left their home two days earlier for a bike ride and never returned home.

His body and his bike were found two days later in Genesee County’s Montrose Township.

Prosecutors said evidence in the family's home suggested the younger Mikes violently beat his father to death in their basement.
