1 killed, 2 wounded in shooting on Detroit's east side

Victims were at weekend-long block party near Erwin, Woodland

DETROIT – A weekend-long block party on Detroit's east side ended Monday morning with a 19-year-old dead and two others recovering from gunshot wounds.

Sgt. Cassandra Lewis said the victims were in the area of Erwin and Woodlawn just after 3 a.m. when three men in a black Chevy Impala approached them.

One of the men got out of the car, announced a robbery and put a gun on 19-year-old Davon Adams.

When one of the other victims tried to defend Adams by threatening the gunman with a glass bottle, another man got out of the Impala and fired shots.

"They just came up with the gun out. He hit him with a bottle and that was it, they started shooting," said witness Marsayvia Jackson.

Adams was killed.

"I had to turn this boy over and make sure he had a pulse on him. You know how that feels? I've never touched a dead body," Jackson said.

A 24-year-old woman and 44-year-old man were also shot, and are in stable condition.

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call the police department at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAKUP.

"We understand that there is fear. We understand that people are kind of hesitant, but that does not prevent us from doing our job," Lewis said.
