Teen from Detroit killed in crash on Florida highway

Teen had moved down to Georgia to live with father, family members say

DETROIT – Local 4 News has learned a 15-year-old boy from Detroit was killed in a wreck on a Florida highway.

The crash happened on I-10 in the Florida Panhandle on Sunday when the car crossed over the median.

A Georgia man and four kids died in the crash when they were thrown from the car. Troopers said they weren't wearing their seat belts.

Family members say the Detroit teen, Lysander Smith, had just moved down to Georgia to live with his father.

"My brother loved his brothers and sisters. He liked to take care of them a lot. He had a heart for kids," Egypt Hardy said.

Smith's stepmother, who was the driver, survived but she is hospitalized in critical condition.

Police said she did not have a valid driver's license.
