A New Jersey middle school has banned girls from wearing strapless dresses to an eighth grade dance.

The reason for the ban, says the school principal Sharon Moffat, is that the dresses are too distracting to the boys, reports ABCNews.

Moffat sent out a letter to parents restricting girls from wearing dresses without straps to their eighth grade formal in which she stated, "Young gentleman are encouraged to wear collared shirts and trousers, young ladies should wear a skirt, dress with straps or a dressy pants outfit."

The Readington Township School District and superintendent both support Moffat's decision, but several parents are upset by the policy.
