State police investigate fatal I-94 crash

18-year old driver died from crash injuries

DETROIT – The Michigan State Police Department is investigating a traffic crash that happened at about 2:39 a.m. Saturday on eastbound I-94, a half mile west of Cadieux Road.

A tow truck was reportedly blocking the left lane of I-94 to tow a vehicle from a prior crash when a 1996 Saturn four-door vehicle rear-ended the truck. The tow truck had its lights activated during the accident and the tow driver was sitting inside.

The driver of the Saturn, an 18-year old New Haven resident, died from injuries sustained in the crash. The two passengers, a 19-year old Mt. Clemens man and an 18-year old New Haven woman, were taken to St. John Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the tow truck was not injured in the crash.

I-94 was closed at Cadieux Road from about 2:50 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. for the investigation. All those involved in the crash were using seat belts, but it appears the Saturn was moving too fast for conditions.

Alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor.
