Southfield police believe son stabbed dad to death at Quality Inn Hotel

Police say 66-year-old man appears to have been stabbed to death at hotel; 27-year-old son is in custody

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Southfield police believe a 27-year-old man stabbed his 66-year-old father to death Thursday morning in a room he was staying in at the Quality Inn Hotel on Telegraph Road at Franklin Road.

Police say the 27-year-old man called 911 about 11:20 a.m. to report he had been in an altercation with someone and he needed police to come to the room.

When officers arrived at the hotel room they found him holding a hunting knife, according to the Southfield Police Department. Officers found his father dead in the room. It appeared he had been stabbed to death.

"This was a tragic incident and we all need to monitor our family and friends for radical changes in their behavior. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and friends," said Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins in a news release.

The victim's name has not been released while police work to notify family members. Both men are Southfield residents.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned on charges within the next 48 hours.
