Southfield Police Department to offer Citizen Police Academy

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -

The Southfield Police Department will hold the 2nd Annual Citizen Police Academy beginning September 4th.  Classes will be held every Wednesday from 6pm-9pm and a typical class will consist of approximately 25 people.

Students will learn about various police operations including crime scene processing, narcotics enforcement and other law enforcement topics.

Chief Eric Hawkins states that “The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to increase understanding between our citizens and the police department, to enhance the strong relationship which already exists and to help citizens understand how they can best utilize the police department in order to maintain the safety and security of their community.”

Those interested in signing up for the academy must meet the following requirements:

  • Live or work in Southfield or Lathrup Village
  • Pass a criminal background check – no felony convictions, pending criminal cases or outstanding warrants
  • Minimum age of 18 years old

Applications must be received by the police department by Friday, August 23, 2013
