Rigorous material may be woven into career, technical education

Snyder signs Mich Merit legislation

LANSING, Mich. – On June 25 at Dakota High School, Gov. Rick Snyder approved legislation to revise the Michigan Merit Curriculum. These revisions will allow more flexibility with technical education programs in hopes of giving students more employable skills.

"We want to make sure students have options for career-oriented courses that include material from rigorous subjects that maintain high educational standards," Snyder said. "We know that a strong public education is an important role in developing talent and helping open opportunities for students for jobs of today and tomorrow."

Public Act 208 of 2014 will allow students to meet algebra II requirements by finishing career and technical programs that are embedded with that course material. Students will also be able to take courses to prepare them for skilled trades.

Public Act 209 of 2014 will require students be informed about potential options in these programs and hopes to streamline the process for those who are interested.

Both bills passed with strong bipartisan support.

The bills were signed on an award-winning desk that was designed and built by students.
