Gunfire at Detroit block party kills 1, wounds 11

Police: 47 shots fired

DETROIT – A man is dead and 11 other people hurt in a shooting Saturday night at a block party on Detroit's west side.

"These are 'urban terrorists' that do nothing positive for our neighborhood," Chief James Craig said. "And it must stop now."

About 400 people were at the party enjoying some barbecue and a basketball game at Dexter Avenue and Webb Street.

According to Craig, 47 shots were fired in what looks like a retaliation-style shooting.

The homicide victim, Malik Jones, 19, was shot multiple times. He was also shot just last month.

Craig said Jones may have taken part in gunfight and was most likely the intended target.

Witnesses said they grabbed their children and ran for their lives.

Of the 11 non-fatal victims, seven are at home recovering from injuries and four are stable the hospital.

Detroit police said they believe two weapons were involved, and that one man may have been the intended target. The semi-automatic guns have not been recovered.

These two 'urban terrorists' are described as black men, one with light complexion and one with medium complexion.

Detroit police are asking for anyone with information to call 313-596-1616.
