SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. -

A 36-year-old woman and a 2-year-old child have been taken to the hospital after a driver reportedly backed over them in Shelby Township, police said.

Shelby Township police and fire departments responded at 6:21 p.m. Wednesday to the accident in a commercial parking lot near 23 Mile and Schoenherr roads.

Initial reports were that a Chrysler minivan driven by a 16-year-old driver from Macomb Township backed over the woman and child, according to police.

The woman, who had serious injuries, and the child from Shelby Township were taken to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. Police said the small child was subsequently transported to Children's Hospital in Detroit.

Alcohol does not appear to be factor in the accident, according to police.

As the investigation continues, witnesses to the accident are asked to call the Shelby Township Police Department at 586-731-2121.
