Serbian Orthodox church celebrates centennial in Detroit

Event held at St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral

DETROIT – A Serbian Orthodox church celebrated 100 years in Detroit over the weekend.

The celebration was held at the St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral at 4575 East Outer Drive near Eight Mile Road on Detroit's east side.

From its original church at East Warren Avenue and Russell Street to its current location, the church has served the Serbian community for a century.

"One hundred years of worship in Detroit," said Rev. Zivan Urosev, a priest at St. Lazarus. "It is a big day."

The weekend centennial celebration was a homecoming event for members who had moved away. The congregation met Sunday and squeezed together for a big group photo.

"There may be four, five generations," said Michael Balow, church president.

The event featured Serbian and Detroit food, music and dancing.
