DETROIT – A competency exam has been ordered for a man who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend whose body was found next to her baby daughter in their Detroit home.

Lorenzo McNeil, 24, is also charged with child abuse, child abandonment and larceny. The exam was ordered during a hearing Tuesday. The results will be revealed in July.

Charmanek Johnson's grandmother had not heard from her in several days and contacted police on April 21. Officers entered Johnson's home on Hazelwood and found her body. She had been stabbed.

The 8-month-old baby was in a crib. She was treated for dehydration.

Prosecutors say McNeil and the 31-year-old Johnson sometimes lived together in the home. He is not the baby's father.
