Money, food stolen from Ypsilanti little league

It's the action on the baseball field that draws most people of all ages to Harris Park in Ypsilanti Township.

However, it's what happened off the field that recently brought police to the field.

"When the lady that was running the concession stand came in she noticed the lock was hanging, (she) opened the door and the money drawer was open. The money was taken and so was the food," said Shannon Grosshans, of the Ypsilanti National Baseball Little League.

Hundreds of dollars in cash and food were stolen earlier this week. It's hard-earned money that helps keep this organization afloat.

"It's very unfortunate. We work really hard to keep this league going, and that's a major part of our fundraiser, the concession stand, so it's really too bad that we lost out on that," said mother Jamina Campbell.

Then, the theft nearly happened again. On Wednesday afternoon, a staff member caught some kids trying to break in. They made a run for it before police arrived.

"Police are investigating. They've been out here twice. They're on top of it," said Grosshans. "There are cameras they're looking into to see if they can catch anybody."

The kids will continue to play ball despite the setback and foul behavior.

"They're taking away from their friends, because I bet a lot of their friends play for this league. They're taking away from the community," said Grosshans.

Police are reviewing the surveillance video. If it reveals anything, it will be key to cracking this case.
