Michigan, Michigan State alumni use rivalry to fundraise for rape kit testing

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, ESPN commentator Jemele Hill to lead teams

DETROIT – The Enough SAID African American 490 Challenge, an 18-month long effort to fund tests of 1,341 rape kits, announced Monday the kickoff of a social media fundraising campaign tied to the historic football rivalry between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.

Team Michigan, headed by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, and Team MSU, headed by ESPN Commentator and Detroit native Jemele Hill, will attempt to raise money between Monday and game day, which is Oct. 17 in Ann Arbor.

The African American 490 Challenge of Enough Said is a campaign by a coalition of African American women and organizations to raise $657,090. The figure represents the cost of testing 1,341 rape kits at $490 each.

The kits are what remain after 11,341 unopened, untested rape kits were found in a Detroit Police Department storage unit in 2009.
