The Michigan Department of Transportation announced the closure Friday of the University Drive overpass in Auburn Hills.

The University Drive overpass in Auburn Hills has reopened after construction.

Michigan Department of Transportation department spokeswoman Diane Cross said last week that inspectors found "a critical condition" with steel beams on the 50-year-old bridge.

"We have a center pier that holds up the I-beams that go across University," said Cross. "A weld has become rusted and structurally separated a bit."

Crews were to install temporary support beams within the week and engineers will have to determine a permanent solution. MDOT has not announced a plan or timetable for permanent repairs.

University Drive leads to Oakland University, which straddles the Auburn Hills-Rochester Hills city limit.
