DETROIT – Construction equipment was used to rescue drivers who got stuck in an icy flood early Friday morning because of a water main break on Detroit's east side.
Several cars got trapped in the water on Gratiot Avenue near Conner Street. The water rose all the way to the hood of some cars.
Firefighters and other crews pushed and pulled as many vehicles out as they could.
A front-end loader was brought in to carry drivers out of the water.
Detroit Police Officer Jamal Hamood helped make sure the drivers were safe.
No injuries were reported.
Drivers said it was difficult to see what was ahead of them.
"I rolled up here and almost got stuck myself. I had to throw the car in reverse. You don't know you are in the ice and water until you are trying to get out," one driver told Local 4.
The main has been shut off, but Gratiot Avenue is closed between Conner and French streets for the cleanup.
