Man stabbed during robbery attempt in Detroit's Palmer Woods

DETROIT – Stephen Breinager's head was wrapped and covered in blood Monday after he was attacked from behind in his own garage on Afton Road in Detroit's Palmer Woods neighborhood.

Video from his home security camera is chilling. It shows a young man come into view from behind the home. He was watching and stalking Breinager before making his move.

"He stabbed me in my head. I turned around. We had a pretty good struggle for about 35, 40 seconds. I grabbed my axe and he ran," said Breinager.

The attacker used a long screwdriver. It was about 11:30 a.m. Monday. Breinager's wife heard him calling for help.

"I came down and found him standing, bleeding with blood dripping down. He said, 'Call the police, I've just been attacked,'" his wife said.

This attack happened during a sudden spike in crime in the neighborhood. Breinager's attacker may have been working with a partner. There was at least one home invasion Monday morning.

Before Breinager's wife called 911, she say Detroit police at a home right across the street. They were checking out a home invasion.

"(The police) came right over, called EMS. Things were handled quite quickly," said Breinager.

He moved to Palmer Woods to be part of Detroit's comeback. He didn't hesitate to defend himself.

"Why wouldn't I? It's my home," he said. "Shaken up? Yeah a little bit. Not your typical Monday morning."
