Man arrested after fleeing from Detroit police, hiding in apartment building

DETROIT – A 28-year-old man was arrested Friday after police said he rammed a patrol car, led officers on a chase and then hid in an apartment building.

Deputy Chief David LeValley said a detective was driving on Interstate 75 near downtown Detroit when he spotted a light blue Chevy Trailblazer driving erratically. As the detective followed the SUV off the interstate, it pulled up next to the patrol car and hit it, LeValley said.

A short chase ensued, but police supervisors called off the chase in the area of Interstate 94 and Russell Street.

Sky4 continued to follow the SUV until the driver parked outside an apartment building in the 11000 block of Holcomb Street.

Sky4 video shows the man getting out of the SUV and going into the apartment building.

LeValley said the SUV that the man was driving was reported stolen by his grandmother, and that officers were able to quickly identify the suspect.

"He was in a second-floor storage room, hiding," LeValley said.

He was taken into custody without incident.

He is not being named until he is charged, but according to court records, he has a criminal history that includes convictions for domestic violence, interfering with a crime report and malicious destruction of property.
