Macomb County man shoots neighbor for talking to his girlfriend, police say

Neighbor expected to make full recovery

Steven Cole (Macomb County Prosecutor's Office)

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Macomb County man shot his neighbor because he thought the other man had been in contact with his girlfriend, officials said.

Police said Steven Cole, 32, of Clinton Township, confronted his neighbor on April 25, 2024, because Cole believed the neighbor had had contact with his girlfriend.

At some point during the interaction, Cole shot the neighbor twice in the parking lot of their apartment complex, according to officials.

Cole’s neighbor was taken to a hospital, and he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Cole was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault with intent to murder -- a life felony.
  • Possession of a firearm by a prohibited person -- a five-year felony.
  • Two felony firearm violations -- each a two-year mandatory felony.

Cole was arraigned Friday, May 3, at 41B Clinton Township District Court. He is being held on $250,000 bond, cash/surety, no 10%.

If he’s released, Cole isn’t allowed to have contact with the neighbor or anyone else associated with the case. He must also wear a steel GPS tether and have no drugs, alcohol, or weapons.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 14 via Zoom.
