Detroit police: Package left outside Guardian Building not explosive

Police chief: Masked man driving Jeep left suspicious package

DETROIT – The Guardian Building in downtown Detroit was evacuated Friday morning for the investigation of a suspicious package near the building.

Congress Street was closed at Woodward Avenue while the Detroit police bomb squad was on scene. The squad moved the package to a secure area in Rouge Park on the city's far west side.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said police were not sure what the package is, but they were moving it to a safe location.

"Right now, it's a suspicious package. It's being moved right now," said Craig.

Police announced Friday afternoon that they determined it was not an explosive device.

Chief: Masked man driving Jeep left package

The chief said someone dropped off the package. The man was wearing a mask and appeared to be a construction worker. He was driving a 2001 or 2002 Jeep Cherokee, possibly black with an amber light on its roof. There was a note on the package that said something to the effect of "open me," Craig said.

Here are surveillance images of the vehicle:

In this image, the masked man is shown near the Jeep and the package is covered by a white sheet next to the Guardian Building.

Craig said the Guardian Building was the only building evacuated. However, he said the Chase Tower (The Qube), also was "affected."

The package has been taken to Rouge Park on the city's west side, where it was investigated further before being taken away by authorities.
