GM expected to make major investment in Warren Tech Center

Warren mayor says $1 billion investment expected from corporation

WARREN, Mich. – General Motors is expected to make a $1 billion investment in its Warren Tech Center, but that depends on a deal with the city.

Warren Mayor Jim Fouts said during his state of the city address Thursday that the city is preparing for a corporate expansion of $1 billion and 1.4 million square feet. He expects it will bring 3,000 jobs or more to Warren.

General Motors spokesman Dan Flores said the company is looking into a multi-year development at the Tech Center site, which is just north of 12 Mile Road between Van Dyke Avenue and Mound Road. However, he said it's all contingent on a tax deal with the city.

"We are working with the city of Warren to see if we can procure tax abatements. Securing funding from the city would be key," said Flores.

Flores would not disclose the amount of investment or additional jobs at the center. The figures came from Fouts.

The GM spokesman said the center needs significant improvements and renovations "to create a state of the art work environment." The expansion would include new buildings and renovations to some existing buildings.

"Warren Tech Center is our key engineering location where we engineer the majority of our products sold around the world," said Flores. "We have growth plans, just like any other company, and we will need more space for more employees."

A formal announcement is expected later this year.
