21 Michigan seniors receive full-rides from Gates

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is the largest and most successful minority scholarship program in the country.

Only 1,000 talented students are selected each year, and this year 21 Michigan students, including five Detroit Public Schools seniors are recipients of the prestigious Gates award.

These select students will receive a full-ride scholarship covering all college expenses, including tuition, housing, books and supplies through graduate school to use at any college or university of their choice.

The five Detroit winners from Cass Tech, Detroit International Academy, and Renaissance high schools will be attending top-ranked colleges and universities in the fall, including Michigan State University, Harvard University and Spelman College.

"The night before I realized that I was a Gates Millennium recipient I was up crying, stressed out, and worried about how my family could pay for me to attend Spelman College," Detroit International Academy senior Breonna Mueller said. "I was relieved from the stress and worry of paying for my life-long education, which includes my Ph.D."

Overall, 2014 DPS students have been awarded $146 million in student grants and scholarships to continue their post-high school education.
