Spilled hot coffee, cross-dressing and a high-speed police chase are just some of the things Ferndale police said happened Friday during the arrest of a mother and son.
Police said an officer was flagged down by two motorists near 9 Mile and Hilton roads who had pulled into a parking lot.
The two drivers had been in a road rage-type incident where one of the drivers, Latanya Tippet-Rhodes, had allegedly thrown a cup of hot coffee on the other driver.
Tippet-Rhodes then sped out of the parking lot and fled down 9 and 8 Mile roads until turning on Hilton and slowing down to let her 23-year-old son, Drake Rashard Rhodes -- who was dressed as a woman -- out of the car. The driver slowed down and the son rolled out and tried to make a run for it.
He didn't get far.
Police said the son tried to run from police across 8 Mile Road, but was hit by a car. He was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
Tippet-Rhodes was eventually arrested but spit on one of the medics who was evaluating her when she claimed to be having medical problems, police said.
She has been charged with fleeing and eluding police, resisting police and driving with a suspended license.
Police said the mother and son both have several warrants out for their arrest in Washtenaw County for other crimes.
Warrants for Rhodes include one for resisting and obstructing. Tippet-Rhodes' warrants include two for assault.
