The man accused in the rape, torture and murder of two people in Port Huron has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Manuel F. Gamez, 31, of Port Huron, faces two open counts of murder, two counts of torture and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

During a court hearing Tuesday, a judge ordered the evaluation.

---26-year-old Melissa Ichenberg was found murdered July 30

Officers found the bodies of Daniel McRoberts, 29, and Melissa Ichenberg, 26, on July 30 at the Gratiot Village apartments.

Assistant Prosecutor Melissa Keyes called the killings "brutal and sadistic."

McRoberts was stabbed more than 50 times, Keyes said, while Ichenberg was strangled.

Gamez was convicted of home invasion and sentenced in 2006 to serve up to 15 years in prison, the Times Herald reported. It said he was freed on parole in December 2010.

In the previous case, Gamez broke into a Port Huron home in the middle of the night and tried to strangle and suffocate a woman with a pillow, Keyes said. She said the woman managed to escape.
