Detroit police officer charged with sexual assault of 31-year-old woman

Woman says officer assaulted her in bedroom after responding to call

DETROIT – Detroit police officer Deon Nunlee has been charged in connection with the sexual assault of a 31-year-old woman.

The alleged incident happened when Nunlee was dispatched to a domestic violence run.

Officer Nunlee, 40, and his partner allegedly went to a home located in the 16000 block on Asbury to respond to a domestic disturbance call at about 3:30 a.m. Oct. 30, 2013. The woman alleged that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend.

The woman says that when the two officers got to the scene Nunlee took her upstairs while his partner stayed with her boyfriend downstairs. She said when they got to an upstairs bedroom Nunlee sexually assaulted her and said that he would return to the house later in the morning, at 7 a.m. When the officer left the house the woman told two friends about the incident and then reported it to the police the next day.

Detroit police say Nunlee was suspended without pay on Feb. 10. He is charged with three counts of criminal sexual conduct of the second degree, one count of assault with intent to penetrate and one count of misconduct in office.

"Certainly, I would go out and say that I think the majority of the public has a great deal of confidence and faith in this police department," said Detroit police Chief James Craig. "And people should never lose sight that when we hire police officers we hire from the community, and you all know that there's people in our community that commit crimes. They make bad choices, make bad decisions, and police officers are no different."

Nunlee was arraigned in the 36th District Court on Friday morning and received a bond of $50,000/10 percent and a preliminary examination at 9 a.m. April 17, 2014.
