Detroit police: Suspect in custody for 91-year-old's slaying

DETROIT – Detroit police have a suspect in custody in connection with the killing of a 91-year-old man whose body and home was set on fire.

Chief James Craig on Tuesday gave very little details about the suspect, saying it was still very early in the investigation.

A Local 4 source said the person in custody is 17 years old.

The development comes just hours after police executed a search warrant in the case at a home in the 20000 block of Bentler Court, which is right next to the victim's home.

Paul Monchnik's body was found early Monday morning.

Craig said someone had attacked Monchnik during a burglary.

"In order for the suspect to cover his tracks, he decided to go leave the location, obtain some gasoline, return and set the victim and the home on fire," Craig said.

Surveillance video shows a suspect driving the victim's van to a nearby gas station to purchase gasoline. Authorities released a photo of a suspect along with the surveillance video showing him with a gas canister at the station.

Craig said the van has been found.
