Detroit police officer struck by SUV at Eastern Market

The officer was making a traffic stop when the driver decided to speed away, striking him.

DETROIT -

A Detroit police officer was struck by a vehicle Tuesday night near Shed No. 7 at Detroit's Eastern Market.

The officer has been taken to a hospital where he is up and walking on his own.

The officer was trying to make a traffic stop on Russell Street. When the officer approached the suspect's vehicle, a black Jeep, the suspect took off, striking the officer with the vehicle.

Police were able to catch up to the suspect and others who were in the vehicle.

Three suspects were taken into custody.

The injured officer is expected to be OK.

Police say the Jeep had been stolen in a carjacking.
