Detroit police investigate possible links between two carjackings

DETROIT – Detroit police are investigating possible to connections between two carjackings that took place Wednesday morning on Detroit's westside. Both crimes happened within an hour, both of the targets were women.

Police tell Local 4 that a 28-year-old woman was carjacked around 4:30 a.m. at the Sunoco station near the Lodge Freeway and Livernois. Her 2000 Pontiac Sunfire (license plate: CKP 3659) was stolen after she was approached by a gunman. The suspect is described as a black male, 25-years-old, wearing a black and grey hoodie, black hat, and Timberland boots.

Culprits with a similar description attempted a carjacking at the Mobil station on W. McNichols near Southfield.

The crime was caught on camera.

"It's our responsibility to protect our customers," said the gas station owner, who asked to remain anonymous. "There's not much we can do but we try."

Around 5:30 a.m., a clerk noticed two black males walking back and forth, seemingly casing the gas station property. Surveillance camera footage shows one of men walking into the store. While the other waiting to make his move, a woman who pulled up to a pump.

"My employee kept his eye on these guys he knew they were suspicious," said the owner.

One camera angle shows the suspect slowly approaching the car. Another angle shows him grabbing at the woman's door but she quickly took off.

That's when the clerk took action. He grabbed an AK-47 the station leaves behind the counter for protection, but one of the suspects fired their weapon. No one was injured. The bullet went through the window of a nearby restaurant. It was closed at the time.

No one was injured but Detroit police say the two men, believed to be in their 20s, took off in a black Dodge Charger.

Investigators are now looking to see if both of these carjackings are connected.
