Driver killed when car slams into tree on Detroit's east side, splits in half

Police say driver could have been going as fast as 120 mph

DETROIT – Detroit police say a man is dead after the car he was driving crashed into a tree and burst into flames early Wednesday morning.

Police said the Dodge Charger appears to have been speeding, possibly going as fast as 120 mph, when it lost control and crashed on Outer Drive near Chalmers.

The impact from the crash split the car in two.

Police are not yet releasing the victim's name.

Outer Driver between Chalmers and Queen is closed for the crash investigation.
