DETROIT – Engine 1 is the Detroit firehouse in the heart of downtown, and it needs a major facelift.
Most of the equipment in the gym is broken and was purchased in the 1970s. The TV relaxation room is anything but relaxing. It's outdated and dingy.
The kitchen has serious problems. Few of the appliances are in working order. The bathrooms are even worse.
"Some new gym equipment would be nice. Air conditioners would be really nice -- it's kind of hot in here," said Sgt. Michael Prusinski.
Many firehouses in Detroit like Engine 1 could use some TLC. Remember, it's where firefighters have to live and work.
"We haven't been updated much in a long time, as you can see from all the older equipment," said Prusinksi.
Recently, actor Dennis Leary was in town with his team to donate critical equipment to help the firefighters. Because of that generous donation, others now are stepping up to help improve the conditions inside Detroit's firehouses.
"It feels great. It's good, it's nice that somebody's looking out for us and helping us out," said Prusinski.
A "Firehouse Fundraiser" will be held between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at 586 CrossFit Asylum in Shelby Township (14626 23 Mile Road).
