-A Delta flight from Germany to Detroit has made an unscheduled landing in Ireland because of a "ventilation issue."
A Local 4 viewer who is on the flight called in to say the plane was put down and evacuated in Dublin.
He said passengers were calmly escorted onto the tarmac and into an area of the terminal while several emergency vehicles surrounded the plane.
He said firefighters and crews in hazmat suits were inspecting the cargo.
"To get off the plane and see a dozen fire trucks and ambulances and paramedics it was a lot," said one passenger.
Susan Kolinski was in Germany for the Frankfurt Auto Show; her flight back to Detroit took an unexpected turn. A few hours into the flight passengers were told the plan was having ventilation issues and needed to land in Dublin.
"Numerous hazmat people and police officers surrounded the plane looking at various pieces of luggage. Mostly cardboard box luggage. They pulled everything off the plane with a fine tooth comb," said Kolinski.
Statement from Delta:
Delta flight 143 from Frankfurt to Detroit safely completed an unscheduled landing at Dublin International Airport after diverting out of an abundance of caution to examine the source of an odor in the aircraft. The flight landed without incident and passengers deplaned normally. We apologize for the inconvenience and an alternate aircraft has been dispatched for customer re-accommodation. The safety of Delta’s customers and crew is our number one priority.
