DETROIT -

A body was found Wednesday evening in a manhole near Chene Street and East Grand Boulevard in Detroit.

Detroit police say the body is a 55-year-old man. Police believe he and his girlfriend were looking for scrapping materials underground.

The man entered the manhole while his girlfriend waited on the street. When never came back out, the woman called authorities.

The body was found by Detroit utility workers and police.

They are still working to retrieve the body from the hole.
