Bernard Kilpatrick checks into Texas prison

Kwame Kilpatrick's dad is going to prison, but for much less time than his son.

DALLAS -

Bernard Kilpatrick, father of ex-Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, has checked into a federal prison in Dallas, Texas. Kilpatrick will be serving 15 months in prison after being found guilty of one count of subscribing a false tax return. Kilpatrick has been ordered to pay $62,212.24 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

Bernard Kilpatrick was charged with racketeering conspiracy, but the jury couldn't reach a verdict. He was acquitted of attempted extortion.

During his sentencing, Bernard Kilpatrick said he had brought "misery" to his family and had deep regrets bout being involved with "this thing."

Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison and his friend Bobby Ferguson was sentenced to 21 years in prison in November.
