DETROIT – A Michigan woman has been charged with animal cruelty in the case of a young yellow Labrador whose front leg had to be amputated in February.
Waterford Township's Olivia Cortes was arraigned on a felony count of killing or torturing an animal this week after being found by police in Ohio.
The charges carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.
Marley the dog's story
On Jan. 26, Waterford Township police were called to a residence on Jay Street on an unrelated issue when an officer noticed an injury to the dog's front left leg. The officer informed the owner she must seek medical attention for Marley.
Thenm on the evening of Feb. 10, police were once again called to the residence and they noticed that the owner failed to get Marley proper medical care. The Oakland County Animal Control was called in and Marley was removed from the home.
Marley's leg was missing it's flesh, "Leaving nothing but exposed bone," according to a police report.
Local 4 aired Marley's story and the community fell in love with him.
He recovered and was adopted by the family of Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson.
