Walled Lake School statement on security

We are not doing anything different in our schools this week. Safety and security is and always has been a priority in Walled Lake Schools.

We review our safety and security procedures regularly; and principals are reviewing procedures and processes with staff and students.

Although we have constant communication with the law enforcement departments that encompass our District, (Oakland County Sheriff's Department, the West Bloomfield, Novi, Walled Lake, Wixom, White Lake, Orchard Lake and Wolverine Police Departments), without us asking them, many of them have been at our schools this morning. We are so grateful to have exemplary relationships with all of them and we will continue to work with them to discuss safety.

We are reassuring any children that need to be reassured and using age-appropriate resources.

One of many possible causes of such a tragedy may be unstable individuals suffering from various mental illnesses.

We remain committed to being vigilant about safety; to review our safety procedures; to do whatever we can to ensure safety; but, at the same time, we do not want to scare, or cause undue concern to, our students and families by enacting new procedures/processes that are not recommended by our local law enforcement officials.  We will continue to collaborate with our local law enforcement officials and each other.
